Some negative spaces are good in the sense that they provide a respite for the eye, however some just draws the eye to the blank empty space instead of directing them to products. The photo below shows a shelving unit with more negative space than it does products. To address this, additional inventory is needed. More shelves added and spaced closer to each other.

I agree, as mentioned, negative space CAN be a good thing especially for premium price point merchandise that begs for lower spatial intensity. Thanks for your comment
